Norse Gods were all, in one way or another, descendants of Giants/Devourers.
Before there was soil, or sky, or any green thing, there was only the abyss of Ginnungagap that existed as a gap between the world/dimension of elemental fire, Muspelheim, and the world/dimension of elemental ice, Nifleheim.
The fist Giant was Ymir, he came to being when the fire from Muspelheim and ice from Nifleheim first met in Ginnungagap. Then, as the frost continued to melt in Nifleheim, a cow, Audhumla, emerged from it. Ymir was fed by the cow Audhumla. When he slept, several other giants were conceived asexually by Ymir’s body, and spontaneously sprang. Fun fact: Ymir was later killed by Odin.
